How the Metal Weight Calculator Works

The calculator first determines the volume of the stock from its dimensions and shape. That volume is multiplied by the typical density of the selected material to estimate weight.

Use it as a metal weight calculator for aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, copper and titanium, or to estimate the weight of common engineering plastics. It supports round bar, square bar, rectangular stock, plate, round tube and hex bar.

Round Bar Weight

Enter the bar diameter and length. The calculator determines cylindrical volume and multiplies it by the selected material density.

Plate & Rectangle Weight

Enter width, thickness and length to estimate the weight of plate, flat bar or rectangular stock.

Tube Weight

Enter outside diameter, inside diameter and length. The hollow center is removed from the volume before weight is calculated.

Hex Bar Weight

Enter the dimension across the flats and the bar length to estimate the weight of hexagonal stock.

Material Weight Formulas

Material weight is calculated by multiplying stock volume by material density. The calculator uses the appropriate geometry formula for the selected stock shape.

Round Bar

Volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length

Rectangle / Plate

Volume = width × thickness × length

Round Tube

Volume = π × ((OD ÷ 2)² − (ID ÷ 2)²) × length

Square Bar

Volume = side × side × length

Why Material Weight Matters

Raw-stock weight can affect purchasing, freight, handling and overall project planning. For machining work, the starting stock can weigh considerably more than the finished component because material is removed during turning, milling, drilling and other operations.

How do you calculate material weight?

Calculate the volume of the stock and multiply that volume by the material density. Different stock shapes require different volume formulas.

Can I calculate metal weight in kilograms?

Yes. Results are shown in both pounds and kilograms.

Can I enter millimeter dimensions?

Yes. Select Millimeters at the top of the calculator and enter all dimensions in millimeters.

Is the calculator exact?

No. It uses typical density values. Exact density and finished weight can vary by alloy, grade, stock condition and supplier.

Does this calculate finished CNC part weight?

It calculates the weight of the stock geometry entered. A finished machined component will usually weigh less after material is removed.
